Lieder Society
Link / Contact: www.liedersocietyvic.com
In 1975, inspired by a visit to Australia of the famous bass-baritone Hans Hotter, Melbourne based singer and teacher Loris Synan decided to investigate whether a State Society could be formed to keep the art of lieder and art song performance before the public. The idea was taken up by many of Melbourne?s finest musicians and the Lieder Society was born. Loris became President and an active Committee was elected that included, as its first Secretary, her late husband Alan McArthur. Together their tireless work ensured the Society?s early success and growth. The Bicentenary Schubert Festival ? a series of thirty concerts spanning the years 1993 to 1997, during which the entire Schubert song repertoire was presented in roughly chronological order ? was a mammoth project undertaken by the Society. Christopher Barling?s vision and guidance of the project, together with his meticulous research, resulted in a Schubert Festival which has not been equalled anywhere in the world. The National Liederfest is Australia?s most prestigious German art song competition. It provides encouragement for aspiring concert performers through a series of recitals where singers and pianists compete for valuable prizes.

Lyrebird Music Society Inc
Link / Contact: www.lyrebirdmusicsociety.org.au
The British Music Society existing as the Lyrebird Music Society Inc is a not-for-profit music society registered in Victoria as an Incorporated Association. Under the name of the British Music Society of Victoria, it was formed in 1921 by music enthusiast and philanthropist Louise Hanson Dyer (1884-1962), as an autonomous local chapter of a parent society in the United Kingdom, which had branches throughout the British Empire. This parent body dissolved in 1933. Since then the Society has been completely independent. The music presented at our concerts is universal in nature, embracing all forms of fine music. The objective of the Society is to promote the appreciation of fine music by presenting a series of concerts each year for its members, their guests, and the general public. These concerts are always of a high standard, featuring professional artists, mostly from Melbourne. The Society encourages composers by annually awarding the Lyrebird Commission for Composition to a Melbourne based composer and presenting the commissioned work at a public concert.
